Gluten Free Cheddar Bay Biscuits (Red Lobster Inspired)

These soft and fluffy cheddar bay biscuits are buttery, flavorful, and gluten free!

This recipe is also yeast free, which makes it great for those who can’t enjoy traditional biscuits due to dietary restrictions. The biscuit mix includes almond flour, baking powder, and delicious seasonings. To be honest, I think they taste just as good as the original!

Gluten Free Options

There are many store-bought gluten free flour blends that would work great with this recipe. The reason why I don’t use any of them is because I also have a rice allergy (yay, me!) and most gluten free flour mixes, if not all, include some type of rice variation 😢. But not all is lost!

Allow me introduce you to my new bff: blanched almond flour. It works great with this recipe because its light composition, when mixed with baking powder, helps create deliciously soft and fluffy biscuits 😋.

I haven’t tried this myself, but you may be able to use chickpea flour in this recipe as well. I would recommend mixing it with either almond or another type of flour rather than just using it straight because chickpea flour is heavier and might make your biscuits hard and dense.

If case you’re wondering, Red Lobster also sells their own brand of cheddar biscuits in most grocery stores, and the gluten-free version is twice as expensive as the regular!

Make it Vegan!

Need to customize? Here are ways you can tweak the recipe to make it fully vegan:

  • Use plant based sour cream and butter
  • Swap out cheddar cheese for a vegan cheese or nutritional yeast
  • Use a vegan egg alternative

How to Store

Since these biscuits are made with dairy cheese, they are best stored in the refrigerator for about 3 – 5 days. They can be easily reheated in the microwave or toaster oven.

Do I have to use cheddar?

Nope! Even though these are called cheddar bay biscuits, don’t be afraid to get creative and experiment with other cheeses like gouda or parmesan. You can also use a different type of cheddar like white cheddar, smoked cheddar or Colby-jack for a little kick!

If you prefer, you can also make the recipe as normal and skip the cheese altogether.

Can You Freeze?

Yes! After letting the biscuits cool completely, you can store them in a plastic bag after removing as much air as possible. Try to lay them in a flat layer so that they freeze evenly. When ready to serve, you can thaw them in the fridge or reheat from frozen.

How to Get that Delicious Golden Crust

Gluten free recipes generally don’t cook the same as traditional, and that includes how well baked goods brown in the oven.

One trick I use to get more color in my baking recipes (like this one), is to set the oven to broil at the end and broil the dish for another 2-3 minutes or until the desired color is reached. This helps give the crust that gorgeous golden color without the risk of overcooking your food.

This method isn’t completely foolproof though, and if you decide to use this trick, keep a very close eye on the oven because biscuits can burn very quickly! 🔥

Dry Mix

  • 1 cup blanched almond flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt



  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. In a large bowl, sift or whisk together dry mix until thoroughly combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together wet ingredients (except cheese) to make a custard.
  4. Combine dry mix + custard until a dough forms. Take care not to over-mix or the dough will get very sticky.
  5. Carefully fold in cheese.
  6. Use your hands or an ice cream scooper to scoop the dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, roughly 2 inches apart. Shape biscuits lightly if needed.
  7. Bake for 13-15 minutes, until biscuits are semi-firm.
  8. Remove from oven and brush remaining ghee over the tops. Allow to rest for ~10 minutes to let biscuits continue firming up.
